Captain James Hanson’s love for fishing runs deep, shaped by a childhood spent exploring the rivers and ponds of Southeast Louisiana. Raised in St. Bernard Parish, he grew up pedaling his bike to nearby waterways, rod in hand, always ready to wet a line. His early connection to the outdoors only deepened when he began working in his uncle’s seafood shop, where he gained firsthand experience in crabbing, shrimping, and learning the rhythms of the water. These formative years sparked a lifelong passion that eventually led to guiding others through Louisiana’s vibrant inshore fishing scene.

With a deep appreciation for the water and a strong family bond, Captain James now shares these experiences with his wife and sons, continuing the traditions he learned growing up. Whether it’s chasing ducks at sunrise or landing speckled trout at sunset, his lifestyle is centered around the outdoors. Though he enjoys all types of fishing, his true specialty lies in targeting big redfish and speckled trout in the marshes and bayous of St. Bernard. His calm demeanor, patience, and deep local knowledge make him a trusted name in Louisiana inshore fishing.

About The Boat

Backwoods Bay Fishing Charters operates aboard a 26-foot custom center console bay boat, hand-built by Charles Leonard in 2019. Designed for inshore comfort and performance, the vessel is powered by a 250HP Suzuki 4-stroke engine, ensuring smooth travel through the marshes and open bays of St. Bernard Parish. With space for up to four guests, the boat offers a stable and efficient ride, whether cruising to remote redfish hotspots or drifting quietly in trout-rich shallows.
